Pentagon Report Concludes Hegseth Placed Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Signal Chat.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has determined that Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by sharing classified intelligence in a private Signal group, according to a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Incident

The chat group in question included details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other individuals in the chat reportedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a publicly available messaging app that was not approved for transmitting classified information.

Serious Risk to Troops

The inspector general's report found that the information shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the safety of US service members if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he actually did so.

Secretary's Reaction

The source indicated that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a short written response.

In his statement, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed information that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the operation. He added that he possessed the authority to declassify material and viewed the inspector general to be partisan.

Next Steps

The completed report has been shared with lawmakers. An unclassified version is anticipated to be released in the coming days.
