RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... early reports are that the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces participating in this strike for their expertise and their courage," Healey commented. "Including them were thousands of UK service members stationed over the festive period. This operation, to remove militants who threaten our way of life, highlights how our armed forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "massive strike" targeting IS targets in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
